Salicylic acid derivatives have been used as remedies for reducing fever and relieving aches and pains since ancient times. They are found naturally in many plants including white willow and wintergreen. -- In a reaction vessel salicylic acid, acetic anhydride and sulfuric acid are mixed. The exothermic reaction will cause the temperature to increase to 70-80 degrees C. -- Once the reaction is complete the vessel is cooled in an ice bath and the acetylsalicylic crystallizes out. This material is re-crystalized in toluene to purify the product. The product identity is confirmed by melting point. The mass of the recrystalized product is used to determine the yield of the synthesis. -- Includes: 2x 25mL acetic anhydride, 1 x 15g salicylic acid, 2 x 25mL sulfuric acid. Required but not included: Pyrex Micro Organic Chemistry Kit (66084-00). |
